On the opening day of IBM's IOD 2008 conference in Las Vegas, Fred Sobotka was inducted into IBM's Data Champion program, a new honor bestowed upon IT professionals who have made exceptional contributions to the data management community. Fred was among the initial group of database experts nominated into this program, and he looks forward to continuing his contribution to the DB2 user community in various ways, including blogging, writing magazine articles, and volunteering at IDUG conferences.

IBM has invited Fred Sobotka into their Gold Consultant Program, an elite group of information management consultants from around the world who specialize in IBM's database products. In addition to IBM's solid endorsement of the the consultants in the program, Gold Consultants also enjoy direct access to IBM's top scientists and executives at private briefings and roundtable meetings. The Gold Consultant Program, which is currently limited to 75 members worldwide, was formed by IBM in the mid-1990s to recognize and support consultants who have become thought leaders in the industry. In 2009, Fred Sobotka was the only consultant from North America invited into the program, and one of only three new members worldwide.
