On the opening day of IBM's IOD 2008 conference in Las Vegas, Fred Sobotka was inducted into IBM's Data Champion program, a new honor bestowed upon IT professionals who have made exceptional contributions to the data management community. Fred was among the initial group of database experts nominated into this program, and he looks forward to continuing his contribution to the DB2 user community in various ways, including blogging, writing magazine articles, and volunteering at IDUG conferences.

It's truly exciting to see IBM release such a full-featured version of DB2 UDB into the marketplace for free. On January 30, 2006, IBM announced the general availability of DB2 UDB Express-C, a version of IBM's world-class DB2 UDB database server that can be freely downloaded, redistributed, and used in production environments. FRS Consulting knows how much can be accomplished with DB2 Express, so the ability of virtually any business to step up to the power of DB2 UDB for free is very encouraging.
